Mid-Century Post & Beam

Designed by the owner when he was an architectural student in 1956 and purchased from the heirs of the original owners in 2004, this classic post and beam home is as innovative today as it was at its inception.

The property takes full advantage of its site on a promontory with views from downtown Los Angeles to the ocean. The client, now a prominent architect, wanted to explore ways to repurpose discarded materials found on site including stacks of old brick, broken concrete and a collection of interesting stones.

With the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser as inspiration, APLD collaborated with the owner to incorporate these materials into patterned hardscaping for a new rear patio and upgrading of the old asphalt driveway.
